The short version

The files you put into these tools are never uploaded. There are no accounts, no sign-ups and no contact forms, so there is nothing for this site to collect from you directly. The two places where data is handled at all are ordinary web server logs and third-party advertising cookies, and both are described below.

Your files stay on your device

Every tool on Useful runs inside your browser. When you compress an image or split a PDF, the file is read by JavaScript running on your own computer or phone, processed there, and written back out as a download. It is never transmitted to a server, which means there is no copy of it anywhere for us to store, lose, or hand to anyone else.

You can verify this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use any tool on the site. You will see the page and its scripts load, and then no further requests carrying your file. You can also disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded — the tools keep working.

One consequence worth knowing: because image compression re-encodes through the browser's canvas, EXIF metadata such as GPS coordinates and camera model does not survive into the downloaded file. That happens on your device, and the original file is untouched.

Server logs

Like almost every website, the web server records a line for each request it serves. That line contains your IP address, the time, the page requested, the referring page if any, and your browser's user-agent string. These logs exist to keep the site running and to investigate abuse or errors. They are not used to build a profile of you and are not sold or shared.

Requests also pass through Cloudflare, which operates the network in front of this site and processes request data on our behalf for delivery and security purposes.

Cookies and advertising

Where the law requires it, personalised advertising cookies are only set after you consent, and you can change or withdraw that choice at any time. If you decline, you will still see ads, but they will not be personalised.
